    • Sorry for the late posting, but due to the upcoming holiday weekend, this ride has been moved up one week. Dust off the bike and pump up the tires. If you're new to cycling or have a friend or family member you would like to introduce to the sport then this ride is for you. 13 miles at a "D" pace. It's about as flat as we cam make it in western Hunterdon County. Helmets and sign up required. Please note the earlier start time.  Inclement weather will cancel by 8 a.m..  Hope to see you there!

Here’s a nice B cruise with a bonus.  We’ll depart the Barley Sheaf School and take some less traveled roads to our south, stairway our way over the rolling Amwell Lake Fish & Wildlife Management Area, cross the border into Mercer County, and ride along the Stony Brook.  After crossing the Honey Branch, we take a quiet route into the west side of the town of Princeton while avoiding the heavier traveled connector roads.  After a brief tour of Marquand Park, we’ll enter the graduate school gate of Princeton University to begin our bicycle tour of the stunning architecture and historic sites found on the campus.  These will include the Cleveland Tower, Blair Hall, Nassau Hall, Maclean House, Prospect House & Garden, and The Chapel.  Other sites will include the Fitzrandolph Gate (and superstition), Cannon Green (with cannon), the “Stamp Act Sycamores”, the Tigers, and Powers Field.   All in all, a nice blend of country ride, a few unfamiliar roads (likely), a bike tour of an ivy league campus, and an enhanced appreciation of the history of the area.  The return leg will be a satisfying combination of similarly remote roads and varying elevation as we head back to the school.

All surfaces will be paved.  There will be one mid-ride commercial water/food stop at the steel Wawa.

Please bring:  Helmet (required), filled water bottles, equipment and skills needed to change a flat, bike derailleurs and shifters in good working order.

Directions to Barley Sheaf School:   From the Flemington Circle, take 202N for approximately 0.5 mile. Turn Right at light on to Voorhees Corner Road/CR650E.  After about 1.1 miles, turn Right (south) at the light on to Barley Sheaf Road (green street sign on right).  After about 0.3 mile turn right at second entrance into Barley Sheaf School, 80 Barley Sheaf Road, Flemington, NJ.  Make quick left into south side parking lot bordering the road near the athletic fields.

    Call if you need assistance.

    Best regards,

    Dan Brown

    Ride description:

    LABOR DAY WEEKEND CENTURY

PLEASE PARK IN THE BACK ON THE GRASS BY THE DUMPSTERS.  There is an event using the paved parking lot.

Tailor made for a FIRST CENTURY RIDE. Or for that matter, your second or third century ride.

Last year we had a group of riders who were doing their first century ride. By all accounts, everything went well and everyone enjoyed the experience riding and the cold beer afterward. I would like to do that again this year with a new group of first timers and if possible the group from last year.

We will again be leaving from the Old Croton Bar and Grill and riding on the fairly flattish plateau. The route will loop back to the start three or four times where we will rest and re-supply our ride food and drink. During the ride we will never be more than five miles from our cars so if a bailout is necessary, it is manageable.

We will start at 7 AM, do a C pace averaging between 13-14 MPH, tailgate lunch at our cars, and finish around 4 PM. In the best of all possible worlds we will all stay together (we will try) but chances are the group will divide into smaller segments.

PREPARATION: If you can regularly do a 35 mile ride and finish in three hours you should fit in with this group. BUT...BUT...BUT you need to start doing some longer rides over the next six weeks in preparation for the century. I would suggest building up to riding 75 miles in eight hours by August 25. While doing these preparation rides you should be testing different pre-ride meals, ride foods, hydration, electrolytes and bike gear. You don't want to try something new during the century and find out it doesn't work for you.

To help in your preparation, I plan to lead some longer rides between now and Labor Day. Keep an eye on your email for ride announcements.

REGISTRATION: If you are interested in doing this ride as your first century, or first century in awhile, register on this posting. We can then keep in touch during the training rides leading up to the century, and if necessary, through emails.

The plan is to have other century rides with different paces and perhaps different routes. These will be posted closer to Labor Day.

Leaving from Old Croton Bar and Grill and heading to the Delaware River. The course will follow the Delaware for about 25 miles and then head up into Bloomsburg. We will head back towards Milford and stop in Frenchtown for a second time. Save the date--join your bike buddies for the Sourland Spectacular on September 7, 2019.  This charity ride will raise money to help preserve the Sourland Mountains and the roads we enjoy biking.  Rides of 26-63 miles start throughout the morning and finish with a nice lunch.  This link should take you to the site where you can get more information and register:  http://www.sourlandspectacular.com/  Riders can choose the length ride they want and ride at the pace they want.  Grab your bike buddy and sign up, wear your club jersey so members can recognize you in the crowd.  Barb, Karla, and I plan to start around 8 AM and ride the 26 mile route at a casual pace.  If you click to RSVP on this website, you will be letting other club members know you plan to attend, BUT you will need to register for the ride and pay your fee at the Sourland site.
