Valley Forge National Park by Bicycle & a Tailgate Picnic

If you have never visited or haven’t visited Valley Forge in awhile, you owe it to yourself to join this adventure.

The ride starts at 10 o’clock at the Visitor Center’s parking lot, and traverses the park on a ten mile paved-multi use bike path.  We will stop at various points of interest including Washington’s Headquarters (if you have bike cleats you will probably have to take your shoes off).  After the bike tour we will enjoy the picnic/tailgate lunch we each packed.  We should all plan to spend some time after lunch in the visitors center to view the excellent displays.

There are several choices for the afternoon, and members can decide which they would like to do.

  1. Bike 10 miles on the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT), a paved bike path, to Conshohocken and visit  a brewery along the SRT.  After a brew or two and maybe a snack, return to Valley Forge. (Barb & I plan to do this)

  2. Spend more time in the visitors center or the park.

  3. Drive into Philadelphia and visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell or one of the several world class museums.

  4. Bike all the way into Philadelphia on the SRT which is about 25 miles.  I think this ride should be done on a separate day and plans are in the works for this adventure.

The drive from WJW headquarters to Valley Forge is about 50 miles and takes a little over an hour.  Route 202 south is a pretty direct route. Bring your own snacks and water for the bike rides, there are no stores on route.  Besides your picnic lunch, bring a chair, I don't think there are picnic tables at the visitors center.

Helmets are mandatory.  Mirrors, plus front & rear flashers are highly recommended.
