Here’s a nice B cruise with a bonus. We’ll depart the Barley Sheaf School and take some less traveled roads to our south, stairway our way over the rolling Amwell Lake Fish & Wildlife Management Area, cross the border into Mercer County, and ride along the Stony Brook. After crossing the Honey Branch, we take a quiet route into the west side of the town of Princeton while avoiding the heavier traveled connector roads. After a brief tour of Marquand Park, we’ll enter the graduate school gate of Princeton University to begin our bicycle tour of the stunning architecture and historic sites found on the campus. These will include the Cleveland Tower, Blair Hall, Nassau Hall, Maclean House, Prospect House & Garden, and The Chapel. Other sites will include the Fitzrandolph Gate (and superstition), Cannon Green (with cannon), the “Stamp Act Sycamores”, the Tigers, and Powers Field. All in all, a nice blend of country ride, a few unfamiliar roads (likely), a bike tour of an ivy league campus, and an enhanced appreciation of the history of the area. The return leg will be a satisfying combination of similarly remote roads and varying elevation as we head back to the school.
All surfaces will be paved. There will be one mid-ride commercial water/food stop at the steel Wawa.
Please bring: Helmet (required), filled water bottles, equipment and skills needed to change a flat, bike derailleurs and shifters in good working order.
Directions to Barley Sheaf School: From the Flemington Circle, take 202N for approximately 0.5 mile. Turn Right at light on to Voorhees Corner Road/CR650E. After about 1.1 miles, turn Right (south) at the light on to Barley Sheaf Road (green street sign on right). After about 0.3 mile turn right at second entrance into Barley Sheaf School, 80 Barley Sheaf Road, Flemington, NJ. Make quick left into south side parking lot bordering the road near the athletic fields.
